Aging a Mirror

If you want an old mirror then its all about Patination (aging). Some acrylic mirror has a removeable backing. Simply carefully peel it off and then apply a diluted wash of steel patination fluid (50/50 with water)....as you apply it you will see the mirror turning black and disappearing so you dont want your solution to be too strong or to stay on for very long. After 10 seconds or more dip the mirror into water and wipe away moisture. On the rear of the mirror paint over with a dark brown black solid coat of paint then protect with a layer of paper or card. You could be very creative with the rear of the frame and make it look 18th century.

When you turn over your mirror remove the protective layer and "hey presto" you have an aged mirror.

Tips

Remove any tiny casting sprues before priming with a metal primer.
